God Centered View : Reflection Paper

Is Your Preaching God-Centered? by Bernie van Eyk - SermonCentral.com

When we talk about meaning, it is about the interpretation or explanation of a particular word or phrase. We asked some people or search on the internet the meaning of something to understand the connotation of a word and we can use it when we have knowledge on that word or phrase. And now, we will define the implication of life and answer the question, “What is the meaning of life?” It is important to know the meaning of our life to determine our purpose in this world or to feel that we are living with a meaningful life.

Life is full of meanings. Many philosophers explained the different meanings of life like the human function of Aristotle, the beatific vision of Aquinas, and the highest good of Kant. They are some philosophers who explained that even there is happiness and morality, the person must realize the matter of his/her own life. We are the one who makes the meaning of it and each of us has different purposes in the world. It was based on us on how we handle our life to be meaningful. But what makes life meaningful? Some people said that it could be done by having some achievements in life, developing moral character, and have learned on those experiences together with the family members. Yes, it’s true that it can make our life meaningful but there are still some views that give a different explanation about the meaning of life.

The God-centered view has its own meaning in life. We actually know that God made everything including us. This view said that we have to fulfill our purpose of living and there’s a reason why we exist. Some said that God’s purpose would make our lives nonsense but others said that it must be of a particular kind for our lives to acquire meaning by fulfilling it. Others conclude that the only way to avoid contingent is creating of God for a reason but it is not sure that it would avoid contingency and has an unclear explanation. Robert Nozick focuses more on God as infinite that God as purposive. He said infinite must acquire its meaning from other condition that has meaning. He added that there is God when a revert is present and the revert will only stop in something infinite that doesn’t need to go beyond itself to achieve the meaning from others. The objection to this theory is that a finite condition could be meaningful in itself. There are some problems with the God-centered theory. First, we can do a thing which God is needed. It says that God must exist in order for there to be just a world, where the world is doing badly and the good fare poorly that would make our life nonsense. Secondly is facing all God-based view is the existence of apparent counterexamples.

Even there’s a lot of theory in God about the meaning of life, we are the ones who will make the meaning of it. We are made by God with a purpose. We exist in this world because God has a plan for us that is needed to be done but there’s the right time to fulfill that plan. God will only help us to fulfill our purpose because we are the ones who will make that plan fulfill by doing actions in a good way. The meaning of life is based on Him. We must put God first before others and allowing Him to manage our life. God is the one who makes our life meaningful even there is no evidence that there is God but we know and we feel in our hearts that there is God, the one who makes our life interesting and significant. Although He gave us some problems, we still love Him unconditionally and continuously keeping the faith because it is testing for us to be a stronger one.

In summary, putting God first is the meaning of life. God makes us exist with a purpose. Allowing Him to manage our life is the right thing to do to make our life interesting. We are the ones who are responsible for our own life to make it meaningful. In relating to business, God is the manager and we are the employee. The goal is to have an interesting and meaningful life, the barriers are the problems we encounter and the tools to be used are the people or things around us. God is the one who will plan the goal and we are the ones who will work to achieve it. The people around us are the instruments to make us happy even we face different problems. We must fulfill God’s purpose and we must learn from it in order to say that our life would be meaningful with the help of God because without him our life would be nonsense.
